Access to quality education and study materials has remained a great challenge for rural and small town dwellers in Ghana. Many young people in these communities are forced to engage in trade and other income generating activities to finance their education. For these people, their parents are hardly able to afford the cost of their education. This is the typical story of so many students in the New Abirem area where Newmont Ghana’s Akyem mine operates.
The Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAkDeF) has cut the sod for construction of a 6-unit classroom block for the Old Abriem community in the Birim North district of the Eastern Region, at the of cost of GH?319,000.
Newmont Golden Ridge Limited Akyem Project, in line with its promise to pay one dollar on each ounce of gold mined to the operational communities, has since November last year, saved 81,000 dollars from production and paid into the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAKDEF).
